Architecture

I have to say, this excursion on  the Final Excursion: Darwin D. Martin House  was my favorite excursion. Very rewarding! There seemed to be surprises around every corner, nook and cranny. The Architecture was simply amazing! The detail and thought that went into that building was exquisite!  Architecture is defined as The art and science of design and erecting buildings and other physical structures. A general term to describe buildings and other infrastructures.  Architecture is  A style and method of design and construction of buildings and other physical structures such as the Darwin D. Martin House.  In relation to buildings, architecture has to do with the planning, designing and constructing form, space and ambience that reflect functional, technical, social, environmental, and aesthetic considerations. All in which we have learned in our class through these weeks. It requires the creative manipulation(Changing) and coordination of material, technology, light and shadow. Those are all pieces of important information in the art world, all in which we learned about. The earliest surviving written work on the subject of architecture is De architectura, by the Roman architect Vitruvius in the early 1st century CE, the first documented Architecture was dated a long time ago in the history of our world! I did not realize the history behing that house. After further research,I learned that Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) designed a unique residential complex for wealthy Buffalo businessman Darwin D. Martin and his family between 1903-1905, also known as the Darwin D. Martin House. The most substantial and highly developed of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie houses in the Eastern United States(AND WE WERE IN IT!), The Darwin D. Martin House received National Historic Landmark status in 1986. The house is considered by leading Frank Lloyd Wright scholars as one of Wright’s finest achievements of the Prairie period and, indeed, of his entire career. What an honor to have the privilage to tour the house!  Thanks!

Knox Art Gallery

Last week we all went to the Albright Knox Art Gallery. As usual, it was very rewarding! The Albright Knox Art Gallery has been around for a long time and it is well known and world known. As we wind down for the semester, this has been a good class. This class taught me to appretiate a lot of different genreas of art. There are so many definitinons to what art really is. I have come to the conclusion art is whatever you want it to be! Every persons interpretation of art is different.  There are many forms of art. Forms of art  means the type of artwork such as drawing, painting, sculpture (carving, modelling, assemblage and construction) architecture, printmaking, electronic media such as computer and digital graphics, ceramics, Visual Design, Graphic Design, collage, photography and Post Modern appropriation and recontextualisation. I also know there is a language for the Arts. There is also visual arts, that is usually more modern. There is also objects and still art. There are people, and portoraits, and other things. Places and spaces are more art to talk about. There are events in art, issues, and themes. There is Media and teqnique to consider when you are talking art. There is scuplture, design, style, process, practice, function, abstract art, conceptual, representational, realistic, and naturalistic art. All of which are part of our ever growing art world. We should appretiate all types of art!

Hallwalls...

The excursion to the Buffalo Hallwalls was as usual, rewarding! I really loved the idea that if you become a member, you can submit work, for a small fee. The hallwalls have been around for over 37 years! Since the 1970s, Hallwalls has been in the front and center of all the action in Buffalo! Of all the alternative space in Buffalo, the Hallwells are  artist-run movement, informing and challenging people of all types with  with new ideas and introducing artists, both known and unknown into the national and international art world. Centered right here in  wonderful Buffalo, NY some of these artists changed the face of contemporary art history in the late 20th century. Through the 1980s, and current the Buffalo  Hallwalls was and has been the on the frontiers of new media, free jazz, performance art, experimental fiction and hip-hop culture. The Buffalo Hallwalls are noted for the follwing features:

-"fulfilling the core mission of supporting the production and presentation of new and challenging work across diverse media and disciplines, including the visual arts, film, video, music, literature, and performance"

-"making Buffalo's cultural history accessible to the world with our on-line archives and, as a founding partner of the Migrating Media initiative, through our work at the cutting edge of video preservation"

-"continuing our ongoing relationship with educational institutions, including the Buffalo Academy for Visual & Performing Arts, to develop future artists and patrons by bringing students into direct contact with the creative class of the early 21st century"

-"spearheading community collaborations and collective action, leading advocacy efforts on behalf of the arts community; taking principal roles in collaborative cultural efforts, including Beyond/In Western New York; and always speaking out on behalf of public funding and community support for cultural institutions across our city and region"

-Throughout its celebrated history, Hallwalls has proven that Buffalo is a bright spotlight on the Great Lakes and Buffalo region,  creating Buffalo to be "an outpost on an international border, the western edge of the Empire State". The Buffalo Hallwells gets attention based on their exert our influence, and make a major difference in Buffalo NY!

New Spraypaint Artist/NYC

Spray paint art is an  art form using spray paint, traditionally on posterboard, but can be done on any other materials that are non-porous material, such as wood, metal, glass, ceramic or plastic. It is different from graffiti art in that grafitti are performed on buildings, trains and the like, as opposed to more traditional art surfaces. I happened to find a new artist on youtube. Its spraypaint art. Based in New York City I think its amazing!

The backround:of spray paint art is a unique form of art that is generally performed on the street in large metropolitan cities creating surreal landscapes of planets, comets, pyramids, cities, nature scenes as well as simple one-colored backgrounds or even multi-colored backgrounds where the paint swirls together or fades from one color to the other through a series of differing values.

The Process: The artist will start by creating a mental layout in his or her head of how they want their picture to go, like all artists do.  The artist needs to know where specific details will go (such as planets, trees, mountains, stars, haze, water, etc.)in order to layer the colors appropriately and in the right places.
The techniques is a series of well placed layers and textures, predetermined blocking and masking using the lids, bowls and recycled objects. For the best turnout the artist should take advanage of all the elements  of art!

UB ANDERSON EXCURSION

We just came back from the UB Anderson Art Gallery. As always, this class is the one out of all my classes I enjoy the most! Getting out in the community and acctually experiencing art leaves an impression on you, rather than an instructor yacking their head off, and in a few weeks you forget it anyways! What we  do leaves an impression on you, introducing us to the art scene in our community! I wish all my professors believed in Prof. Greenan's teaching style! Kudos to Prof. Greenan's style! As usual, with my recent posts, I try to find a video to make it more interesting...and fun...so, I found a video, that reminds me of our class...its kind of funny....check it out! Its a fun class! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVMI8nb3mCM&feature=results_main&playnext=1&list=PLB85BAB0F6CF27225

Every teacher has a different teaching style, but Prof. Greenan makes it so it is impossible to forget the lectures and excursions! As usual....Great Excursion! Thanks! Feel The Rush!

Week of the 28th

I don't know about you, but I am enjoying the different artwork that people are posting! I believe the style of art someone gravitates towards tells allot about a person. I am looking forward to our next excursion! I was looking up art videos on youtube about different styles and genreas of art, and stimbled on this video. This video kind of runs hand in hand with the question we have been answering...."What is Art?" This video can be controversal to many people. I just thought it was very interesting.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tncwN7Hdyeg

This guy literally uses his own body as a canvas, sometimes even using his own blood!
So, question is, do you think this is art? I do! Take a look at his video, he is good!

I also found a few more videos that depict "weird" Art. Take a look. Food art;

Excursion #2

The Burchfield Penny Art Gallery Was Phenominal!
These were the two images I loved: July Sunlight Pouring Down

Sunburst

The tour was great, it s always great seeing new pieces of art! My eyes have definately been opened to the art world! I am definately enjoying this course! I wasnt a huge fan of Jackie Felix's work, although I can appretiate the work! Boy did she go through some pain in her life, it is very evident from her very angry paintings and brush strokes! Painting is not only something you can see, but it is something you can feel. Your emotions can come through a simple brush, or a can of paint, a pencil, or even a piece of crumpled paper. It is a good way and escape to release emotions! I hope everyone enjoyed the tour as much as I did, I am looking forward to more excursions in the comming weeks, as I cannot believe we are 1/4 way through the semester!

Herb And Dorthy Follow up.

Class today, with Herb and Dorthy was very interesting. It was an interesting perspective on the life of those two. One thing I thought to be very funny was that they went to the ends of the earth, so to speak to collect art, even babysitting a cat! The video, was very good insight into their lives. I thought it was too funny, after donating all the work, instead of buying furnature, to live comfortably, what did they buy? You Guessed it... MORE ARTWORK! I do not think you could change Dorthy, and especially God forbid Herb into anything but the way he has been living his life up to this point, to change. Wow! What a contribuition to the art world. Another interesting fact about those two, is not only was it a major contribution to society, they did not want an money for it!

COLLECTION #1

Week of Feb 8th

As we begin discussing in class:

• What is a collection? To me, a collection is anything you have multiples of, something you cherish, and desire more of, in some cases.

• What should you collect? You can collect anything that you have interest in, from a button to gold. That would be your personal preference what you choose to collect. Herb and Dorthy collected everythng, the only requirement was that it fit in their Apt, and they could get it home. Not much to ask.

• Where can you get art?You can get art from many many sources. The first place you can get art is by making it yourself. Nothing is better than making it yourself, something you can cherish, or even make a profit fom down the road. Another was of getting artwork is by buying it, going to local festivals and such. Artists sell their work at galleries as well. Herb and Dorthy even went to the extent of "babysitting" an artist's cat, in exchange for a piece of their artwork! How Funny! Talk about dedication to the love of artwork! How do you collect it? By purchasing, or like stated above by trading sevices, not commonly known such as pet sitting. Here is a link on collecting art.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SI1XAUXfJ0
• What is a collector's responsibility to the art and even the artist? The a collector's responsibility to the art and even the artist to cherish, and respect the artwork. See eveyone in class!

Herb and Dorthy

Herb and Dorthy. Now there is Passion at its finest, when it comes to collecting artwork.  I found a few other clips on them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qT-qxUqs44. This link just basically says how they afforded the artwork, Dorthy basically paid the bills and Heb bought the artwork. They had no one style they collected, the only one thing they required was that it fit in they're apt.

Herb and Dorthy would also sell the work for pennies on the dollar, they went into some dangerous areas to get his artwork. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULO5JcuJY24

Herb and Dorthy even went to the extent to watch someones cat, in exchange for a piece of artwork. What a love for Art! They were very close with the artists. They even wanted some unfinished art. Seems like artists looked up to them for advice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpdM_Fj5Cms

The 1st piece they bought as a couple; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ8GO5qHmE4&feature=related .

Herb and Dorthy are the perfect example of people that will go to any extent to collect artwork. I am looking forward to discussing this further in class!

1st Excursion Post

I checked out The Artist's before I went to the gallery, so I was familiar with them. It was a great experience and quite a difference seeing them in person. My faorite artist of the three, however still remain the same from when I viewed the artist's on the website. I Loved the art of Megan Greene. To me, the art was very detailed, more so than the others. I specifically like the use of the one main bold color, as the point of entry. I felt like her use of that one main color, was her focal point to draw the Viewer in.

Balint Zsako, What an interesting artist.  I found that he too used a lot of color. I prefer, personally the flowing kind of Art, like Megan Greene. His work, to me seems a bit more morbib, in one sence, on the other hard, he appears to have an appretiation for the human body, though in my opinion expressed strangly at times. He is truely a unique artist.

Esther Neisen, another unique artist. But What artist isn't unique? To be Esther Neisen used a lot of intriquite detail in her work. How hard do you think if was for her to create all those  Tiny details in her work. I can appretiate her art, it must have been difficult.
Ultimately, this was a positive experience for me, getting to know the different styles of artwork is very interesting, and rewarding. I am looking forward to more exploration through the art world.

2nd week

We are in our 2nd week. Class is very enjoyable. I attended the Hallwalls on Delaware Ave. It was Interesting. I had to ask exactly what the Hallwalls were. I soon found out that Since the 1970s, Hallwalls has been in the forefront of the alternative space and artist-run movement, informing and challenging audiences with new ideas and launching artists into the national and international art world. Incubated right here in Buffalo, some of these artists changed the face of contemporary art history in the late 20th century. Through the 1980s, Hallwalls was on the on the frontiers of new media, free jazz, performance art, experimental fiction and hip-hop culture. The Hallwells have been around for 37 years.  The mission of te Hallwalls is fulfilling the core mission of supporting the production and presentation of new and challenging work across diverse media and disciplines, including the visual arts, film, video, music, literature, and performance. The whole idea is by making Buffalo's cultural history accessible to the world with our on-line archives and, as a founding partner of the Migrating Media initiative, through our work at the cutting edge of video preservation, according to the websites I looked up and researched on.  The acctual event was called Pecha Kucha. I also reasearched that. PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public.
It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. It was our turn in Buffalo. Pecha Kucha is a term , Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. Pecha Kucha is a worldwide event, which seemed to be very interesting.

One of my favorite artists' is M. Scott I collect paintings of his I am into landscape pictures. I enjoy Nature's beauty. One of the earliest forms of art are lanscape art.  One reason I took this course is I enjoy art, and wish to discover more realms of art. I love when mountains, trees or other natural features are included. Both the Roman and Chinese traditions typically show grand panoramas of imaginary landscapes, generally backed with a range of spectacular mountains – in China often with waterfalls and in Rome often including sea, lakes or rivers. Landscape backgrounds for various types of painting became increasingly prominent and skillful during the century  Lanscape Art is a term that covers the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. In China Landscape Art means pure, or without flaw. Water is an important element in the Chinese lanscape traditions. Landscape painting has been called "China's greatest contribution to the art of the world.". There are increasingly sophisticated landscape backgrounds to figure subjects showing hunting, farming or animals from the  onwards. This is seen especially in the Han Dynasty. The website I found in which I have a similar picture in my living room is  en.allexperts.com.
